What are the key factors that motivate you to further your career and professional growth with Cheng & Co?

Cheng & Co has a well-balanced philosophy driven by profitability yet highly maintains professional ethics and quality. Team work is one of the core values in Cheng & Co where we have an excellent team of professionals and partners who work together to achieve common objectives.

How much have you gained in professional and personal development throughout your tenure in Cheng & Co?

From a personal perspective, having travelled frequently to other countries and worked with different types of people, I have learnt a lot from different cultures, lifestyles, expectation gaps and business opportunities in these countries. It broadened my mind and changed my thinking to a certain extent. From a professional perspective, it has sharpened my knowledge through working with other professionals within Malaysia and abroad which helped me learn more about practices and regulations of different professionals and countries.

What are the areas that you feel Cheng & Co is different from other organisations?

Cheng & Co is a good platform for young professionals who want to be entrepreneurs. If you start on your own or with friends, you will lack resources and experience. Cheng & Co is a platform with ready and proven protocols, systems and a team of supportive partners. Every partner contributes their strength to compensate for the weakness of each other. This spirit of sharing is the uniqueness of the firm.

What areas do you feel require further improvements?

No doubt nowadays technological advancements affect every industry including ours. Our role is changing from the traditional way of compiling compliant paper works etc. to advisory rolesmainly to advise businesses in strategic planning, technicality vs practicality of law compliance, business risks and opportunity, funding, etc. The paper work nowadays can be handled by automation processes and artificial intelligence can supplement advisory functions. I wish to contribute my 20 years’of experience in this area for the benefit of Cheng & Co.

What development plans do you have for your division in the future?

Globalisation has made business borderless hence penetration into markets of other countries particularlyin Asia Pacific will be our plan for the next 10 yearsto fulfill our Vision of being the leading home grown international accounting firm.

As a partner and director in Cheng & Co Group, what advice do you have for managers, young employees and newcomers to the firm?

Execution is important not just talking. Execute the plan and keep on improving. Make the right career choice. This is more effective than believing in destiny. Do things right by learning from past mistakes.

Malaysian Business Reporting Standard (MBRS) – A Revolution of Annual Returns Submission

The Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM) introducedan online submission platform based on the eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) format in 2018. This submission platform, known as the “Malaysian Business Reporting System” (MBRS), allows for the annual submission of:

• Financial Statements and Reports (FS);
• Annual Return (AR); and
• Exemption Applications (EA) which are related to the FS and AR applications

The objective of implementing this submission platform is to go paperless or reducethe usage of hard-copy submissions of annual returns.

MBRS Release 1 was issued in January 2018 and businesses are now able to download the MBRS Preparation Tool (mTool) for free at MBRS Release 2 is expected to be launched in the near future and this willenable companies tosubmit, prepopulatethe AR data and
manage the company’sdashboard via the portal.

The MBRS contains three major components thatare:
1) XBRL – Extensible Business Reporting Language It is a computer readable language that standardises the terminologies of business reporting. It is commonly used by more than 100 regulators over 60 countries, withBank Negara Malaysia among them.

2) mTool
It is a utility that is Excel-based thatallows users to generate the filing forms for preparing financial statements, annual returns and importing data from MS Word, etc. into the portal.

3) mPortal
It is the online submission platform that allowds users to:
– submit online all filing created using mTool
– download the Template
– check submission status updates
– generate reports
– utilise the Digital signature facility
– utilise the online payment facility, and more.

The system is expected to benefit companies ranging from Sdn Bhd toBhdand Foundations in terms of time saving and cost effectiveness. With the currently manual submissions, companies or company secretariesmust bring documents to SSM for submission which can be in huge volume, especially during peak season with tensof thousandsof submissionsto process in a day. SSM has to manually scan these documents and input them into their system. With the new online portal, it definitely reduces processing time and human errors.

The system is extremely secure and caters for high traffic submissions during peak periodsand provides flexibility to companies to access them anytime, anywhere.

The implementation is carried out in two phases. The first phase allows companies to practise using the system. SSM is conducting series of training sessions throughout the year for accountants, company secretaries, auditors, directors and other stakeholders to learn and get familiar with the system.Subsequently, these systems will become mandatoryfor companies.
