The year 2015 ended on a high note for Cheng & Co Group with the hosting of our Annual Cheng & Co Conference with Innovation as its core theme. The conference featured many renowned local and international industry experts and provided solutions for organisations to take innovative measures towards managing their businesses.

This gave us great optimism for 2016 and at the beginning of this year, we were all looking forward to moving up another gear. The global economy might be on a slow road to recovery but this is not an obstacle for us in our drive towards further consolidating Cheng & Co’s position as the leading home-grown, international accounting firm. At present, we are not only looking to make an impact in the ASEAN region but Asia as a whole.

Our first ground-breaking achievement is one that has never been done in Malaysia before. In conjunction with the official launch of our Melaka branch office, Cheng & Co also launched our state-of-the-art Broadcast Centre. This was made possible and took off successfully thanks to the strategic partnership that we have in place with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and Kaplan Group.

The Broadcast Centre is the first of its kind in Malaysia to provide a platform for locals to pursue their dream of completing the prestigious ICAEW qualification. This, in turn, will help produce an increased number of world class professionals who would be able to join leading and fast growing accounting firms in Malaysia and the region while addressing the shortage of talent that has been hampering the growth of local and international accounting firms.

While pursuing the ICAEW is a major boost for Malaysians, doing so with Kaplan’s educational and learning excellence with leading online learning technologies, award-winning study materials and support from the industry’s most experienced tutors will ensure students get the very best international accounting education has to offer. The ICAEW qualification obtained here is of the same and equal quality and standard with the one attained in London.

Besides the launch of Cheng & Co’s Melaka branch and the Broadcast Centre, the Women’s Leadership Centre was also launched on the same day. This underlines Cheng & Co’s unwavering commitment towards empowering women and creating future female leaders. This is reflected in our own firm where out of more than 300 staff in our offices nationwide, 69% are women. The centre will be led by the Director of our Melaka office, Ms Tay Lee Hoon and funded by Cheng & Co Foundation.

Less than a week after the launch of the Melaka branch, the Broadcast Centre and Women’s Leadership Centre came a game-changing event for Cheng & Co. We officially launched Pro B Centre, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cheng & Co, offering a one-stop destination for the most sought after SSO facilities and solutions for businesses keen on exploring innovative measures to ensure the future success of their organisations.

It all began when Cheng & Co became the first accounting firm in Malaysia to obtain the MSC status SSO license from MDEC in August 2015 which paved the way for us to establish Pro B. As a technology led entity, Pro B’s main objective is to aid companies in achieving operational success through strategic cost efficiency and human capital utilisation. Besides benefiting our member firms, Pro B also offers long term business sustainability to our International Network.

Cheng & Co embarked on this business model after years of close encounter and in depth understanding of the various pressure points often experienced by rapidly growing companies of different sizes.

Another key moment for our firm in 2016 was at the TGS Asia-Pacific Conference held in Taiwan, in June where Chief Operating Officer Tom Wong and myself presented Cheng & Co’s growth strategy at a knowledge and experience sharing session with TGS members from various countries.

Due to our impressive growth story and the strategies that we have developed and implemented over the last 23 years to become the “firm of the future”, Cheng & Co was invited to participate in organising the prestigious TGS global conference in Malaysia, in November 2016.

All our landmark launches in the first half of 2016 have set the tempo for the rest of the year and, with the upcoming TGS global conference, Cheng & Co is looking forward to ending 2016 on a much higher note.
